Immediate Dentures in Edmonton

When the extraction of all of your remaining teeth becomes necessary, immediate dentures can be a temporary solution. During immediate dentures, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and gums before extraction. This impression will serve as a model to design your new denture. After the extraction of your natural teeth, dentures will be inserted.

Now that you have made the final decision to have your remaining natural teeth removed, it is important to know that getting dentures is not the end of the dental care process for you. Please remember to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dental professional regularly. Our procedure for immediate dentures:

  • After being referred to or from one of the dentists we work with, we can decide whether removing any natural teeth is the right treatment for you.
  • On the basis of the structure and colour of your current teeth, we can decide the colour of your tooth that will look natural in your mouth.
  • Before extraction, we work on your denture to make sure you are happy with the look of the teeth.

You can rely on us to return your smile to its natural and original beauty by setting up the denture teeth.

Tips for Adjusting to Your Dentures

  • 24 hours after extraction, remove and clean your immediate dentures.
  • Rinsing your mouth with a warm saline solution after extraction will promote healing. In the first 48 hours after extraction, avoid swishing or sucking since the blood clotting in the sockets is important for the healing process.
  • Please make sure you have a 24-hour and a 1-week checkup appointment booked.
  • It takes one to six weeks for your extraction sites to heal sufficiently enough to allow placement of your first temporary liner, called a tissue conditioner. Many insurance companies will pay for this liner after three months only. Please inquire with your insurance company as to what your policy will cover.
  • It is advisable to place a second tissue conditioner for an additional six to eight weeks to allow further healing prior to the permanent reline. In some cases, a third tissue conditioning may be needed. This can be a difficult period of adjustment and your patience is required.
  • Six to eight months following extraction, your permanent reline can be done. Again, please check with your insurance as to what coverage you have.
  • Due to natural resorption, or shrinkage, dentures should be relined every two years.
  • Dentures should be replaced every five years due to natural wear and shrinkage of bone.
  • Since the time and severity of the healing process varies from patient to patient, the tissue conditioner and relines are not included in the price of the dentures.
